From the Director’s Desk: aka- her little cupboard in the closet- Paulette Young, RECE
The start of another exciting school year is upon us and I wish to welcome all our new and returning families to RPNS!
As a parent cooperative, our wonderful nursery school thrives of the support of parents and the expertise of our early childhood educators. This provides a nurturing and educational environment for the children.
The RPNS Board of Directors and teachers are preparing for our Orientation Night & Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 7:00 pm. A reminder to all enrolled families that it is mandatory for at least one adult from each family to attend this very informative evening. It is also an opportunity to meet other parents and caregivers.
All of the teachers at RPNS are Registered Early Childhood Educators with many years of experience. Our teaching team this school year comprises Tina Zandri (Senior Preschool and Assistant Director); Dulce Ibarra (French Introduction and Kindermusik instructor); Janet Clayton (Toddler and Junior Preschool); Jenna Devine (Junior Preschool). We are also happy to have our returning Toddler Teacher, Lisa Rocheleau return after a maternity leave. These dedicated teachers look forward to providing a positive learning experience for all the children in collaboration with the parents.
“The web of family and community is the child’s anchor for early development”
(Early Learning for Every Child Today, Ontario, 2007)
All families have been provided with a scheduled one hour visit during the week of Sept. 2 to 5. This visit allows time for your child to get to know their new teacher, meet some of their classmates and check out all the fun activities! Parents will have the opportunity to chat with their child’s teacher and meet some other parents. Kindly bring any outstanding registration package documents with you when you visit (example: immunization records, police checks, fees). We are setting up a “Summer Fun” display in our hallway and would love a photo of your child doing a summer time activity. During your visit, be sure to take a family pose at our “Family Photo Booth” located in room 8.
Riverside Park Nursery School as a parent cooperative understands the importance of family. During the month of September, materials set up in all activity areas will focus on family and friends. Our September curriculum (based on Ontario’s Early Learning for Every Child Today ~ ELECT principles) will focus on two domains of development: Social and Emotional.
For the Emotional Domain, teachers will help the children with the following skills ~ self-concept, identity formation, self-esteem, recognizing and expressing emotions.
For the Social Domain, teachers will encourage the following skills ~ making friends, conflict resolution and social problem-solving, peer group entry skills, and co-operating.
Be sure to check out the Curriculum Bulletin Boards in our hallways for more details and photos.
CALENDAR OF EVENTS
On the RPNS website homepage, you will find a “Calendar of Events” outlining special activities/reminders for the month of September. We will celebrate all children with September Birthdays on Monday, Sept. 22 (for 2 day programs) and Tues. Sept.23 (for 3 day programs). RPNS provides a banana bread cake for snack time on these days. Due to food allergies, we ask that parents do not bring in cakes, cupcakes or other food treats for their child’s birthday. In lieu of food, a “loot bag” is a better option should you really want to bring something (but not mandatory!).
GROUP CIRCLE TIME WITH PAULETTE
Each month (usually the last Thursday and Friday of the month), Paulette gathers all the children on the big carpet in room 6 for songs, stories, music and fingerplays. Group circle provides the children with an opportunity to function in a very large group (community spirit!) and prepares them for future special visitors/events.
Sept. 25 & 26 will be our first group circle and Paulette will talk to the children about fire drills (we have to do one a month for licensing requirements). We will practice our first fire drill on these days so I’m sure your child will tell you all about it!
WHAT DOES MY CHILD NEED FOR THEIR FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL?
*school bag/back pack/diaper bag
*photo for their cubby tag
*photo of them doing a summer fun activity
*diapers/pull ups and disposable wipes
*complete change of clothes
*outdoor clothing suitable for the weather (sweater, sunhat)
Remember to LABEL all your child’s items with their name! Kindly ensure that your child’s bag does not contain any items that could pose a potential health threat to others (this includes food items, medication, cough drops etc.).
SHOW & SHARE DAYS
The teachers prefer that children do not bring toys to school as it can create problems (items get lost or broken). We have lots of toys and equipment here! To compensate, we have a “Show & Share” day on the first Thursday and Friday of the month. We will skip September (short month and too busy!) and our first “Show & Share” days will be held on Thursday, October 2 & Friday, October 3. Your child can bring in one item (toy, interesting item, book, cultural item) to school and they will be encouraged to talk about their item at circle time. We ask that the toy or item is non-violent in nature (no toy guns) and should it be a ‘live item’ (bug, pet snake etc.); to inform the teacher prior to the show & share date.
From Janet, Lisa and Jenna: Toddler and Jr. Preschool
Hello and welcome to all our new families and welcome back to those who are returning. We hope that you have had an enjoyable summer and are ready for the year ahead.
Last week, we started getting the room, lists, books and programs ready for your arrival in September. We trust you will find our program and program materials both interesting and developmentally appropriate.
The first month is a time to learn about each other and how to cooperate in a group setting. The Toddler group will have a short group circle together, incorporating lots of music and movement and hand holding activities. They will end their morning outside in the play area, dressed for going home.
The Junior Preschoolers will begin their mornings outside, in the play yard, with all the other Preschoolers. It is important that they are dressed appropriately when they arrive at school. The Juniors will come inside at 9:30am (after ½ hour of play) and split into 2 groups for circle and snack, after which they will be engaged in free play for the rest of the morning.
A cooperative program provides the parents with the opportunity to play with your child and others while doing a duty day. You will be in charge of helping children use the washroom, helping deliver snack and a few other chores. Most important of all you are part of our child adult ratio. Please come prepared to participate in all our activities (even outside on cold mornings) and have fun!
Our programming for each month is displayed on the Bulletin Boards. Please note that it reflects our use of the ELECT programming structure that is now being used in the Elementary school system and many children’s facilities. We also have an ELECT book for each child which is located on the door of the Toddler/Junior Preschool room. You are encouraged to read the observations that we write and to also write your own (there is a designated space) if you wish. Each new entry will be marked with a clothespin, when you have read it, please remove the pin from the entry and pin it to the cover so that we know it has been read.
Please note on our program plan that the Root Skills for the Toddler’s, is printed first and the Preschool section is printed second. It is also an interesting fact that we are able to provide materials that are motivating for both age groups. Learning, as explained in the ELECT document (we have hard copies on our parent bookshelf and it is available for reading and downloading on line) is a continuum. Toddlers and Preschoolers usually display learning from both areas . There is not a real dividing line; this is the nature of true learning.
