JUNE at RIVERSIDE PARK NURSERY SCHOOL

The countdown is on…only 3 weeks of school left! It’s hard to believe how fast the months have passed us by! It seems like only yesterday we were playing in the snow! Now the sun is out, the flowers and trees are in full bloom and summer holidays are right around the corner!

To wrap up the school year, we thought it would be fitting to enter the summer season with the ever appropriate theme of “By The Sea!” The children will explore the wonderful world of sea life through creative arts, science and water play both indoors and outside is our play yard! June 5th and 6th will be “Aloha Days” with a map quest hunt and slushy drinks!

June also brings with it a time for celebration! Riverside Park Nursery School’s graduation ceremonies are currently being planned, and it promises to be an emotional event! Parents…don’t forget your tissues! Save the dates: June 21st and 22nd !

* Please note that the last official days of nursery school are June 21 and 22. *

Butterflies of May
Our science experiment on the life cycle of the Pink Lady Butterfly was amazing! Many thanks to Butterflies & Roses for donating a butterfly house to our nursery school. The children watched in wonderment as the little caterpillars grew into big caterpillars. Within a couple of weeks, they attached themselves to the roof of the butterfly house and shed their last skins to become a chrysalis! Pink Lady Butterflies emerged on May 22 and we released them in our play yard later
that week, cheering them on with our “good byes!”.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

1- Parents that utilized our Before & After Care services during the month of MAY will be invoiced as usual at the end of the month. However, for the month of JUNE, parents are to pay (in cash only and exact amount please) for each day they require Before and/or After Care. For those parents who can predetermine how many days they will use the service during the month of June, a cheque for that amount can be provided by June 1.

2- With warmer weather now upon us, it is important to take extra sun safety precautions! Please ensure that your child has a proper sun hat and sunscreen. We ask that sunscreen be applied before arriving at school.

3- Please ensure that your child has proper indoor and outdoor footwear. “Flip flop” style shoes are not recommended as they can cause a falling/tripping hazard. Shoes should have a good rubber sole and straps or laces that keep the shoe on your child’s feet.

4- The tricycles are now being used! If you would like your child to ride, please make sure to bring a proper fitting helmet. Helmet bins are labeled by class and are located outdoors. Please remember to label your child’s helmet clearly.

5- Tuition receipts for January 2012 to June 2012 will be ready for pick up from your child’s file folder on the last day of school.

RPNS GRADUATION CEREMONIES

Mark your calendars, book off work and bring your tissues!!! June 21st and 22nd are the scheduled Graduation ceremonies for the children. This is a very special event! These dates also mark the last days of school. (This is a good opportunity to go through our school’s Lost & Found and reclaim any items you may have forgotten! Remember to take all art work, helmets, toys, etc. home with you! Otherwise, these items will be donated to a local charity.)

Parents, come celebrate with us in recognition of your amazing children and all their scholastic accomplishments! All family members welcome. Kindly see the “Graduations Food Sign Up Sheet” posted in the hallway for food contributions.

Adieu!

The staff would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your ongoing support and commitment to Riverside Park Nursery School. We are so proud of our program and it’s you…the parents and families, who make all this possible! We have been blessed with yet another amazing school year, filled with fun and excitement!

We wish nothing but the best to all our departing families as your children venture on to bigger and brighter adventures! Kindergarten…here they come!

We look forward to seeing all our returning families again in the fall! Another new and exhilarating school year awaits you!

Lastly, thank you for entrusting your children into our care. As dedicated educators, we hope that we have made a positive and profound impact in your child’s life! Children grow and flourish so quickly, and we are honoured to have been a part of their special journey!

HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY SUMMER HOLIDAY!

Wishing you all continued success and happiness,

The Staff at RPNS

CIRCLE LETTERS

A June Note from Lisa and Janet

Our theme “Sea” you later, not only indicates our sea creature and sea shell displays that will be on the science table, our “day at the beach” in the block area and finger painting whales in the art area, but it also tells you that we will be graduating (Thursday June 21 and Friday June 22) and closing for the summer break.

We have so enjoyed watching your childrendevel op over the past year. They have become a real group, learning to listen and wait for each other. They can hold a partner’s hand and make it all the way to the playground without “letting go”. They are having conversations with each other and with us, which is just the most wonderful thing ever!

Lisa and I want to thank you for trusting us to be a part of your child’s life. We would also like to thank-you for being a participant in a cooperative nursery school. It involves more time on your part, with class room participation and board and committee….work, but it is wonderful when you can take a part in your child’s educational process. Hopefully the ELECT document that we are using (each child has a folder with our observations that we try to log in as quickly as we can) will be useful to you on a personal level. The information about developmental abilities and the way that we all learn through play is conveyed in a very thoughtful manner throughout the document.

We are hoping that the weather remains terrific so that we can continue having our morning program outside in the play yard as much as possible. It is fun to watch friendships grow between the junior preschool group and the senior groups. The toddler group has to be out on their own because of their age (ministry requirement for safety), but they are beginning to have cooperative play. It is marvelous to see those 12 boys using all the equipment and thoroughly enjoying their time in the play yard. When the weather is lovely we try to take full advantage, by having as much of our programming outside (paint, special art projects, water play, dress up clothes, circle time, along with bikes and helmets and all our regular outdoor equipment). We have been able to do this in May and hopefully we will continue to have many more perfect days to play outside in June.

A song that we will be singing this June is, Baby Beluga, with words and tune by Raffi. The following are the words:

Baby beluga in the deep blue sea,
Swim so wild and you swim so free.
Heaven above and the sea below,
And a little white whale on the go.

Baby beluga, baby beluga,
Is the water warm? Is your mama home,
With you so happy?

Way down yonder where the dolphins play,
Where you dive and splash all day,
Waves roll in and the waves roll out.
See the water squirting out of your spout.

Baby beluga, oh, baby beluga,
Sing your little song, sing for all your friends.
We like to hear you.

When it's dark, you're home and fed.
Curled up snug in your waterbed.
Moon is shining and the stars are out.
Good night, little whale, good night.

Baby beluga, oh, baby beluga,
With tomorrow's sun, another day's begun.
You'll soon be waking.

Baby beluga in the deep blue sea,
Swim so wild and you swim so free.
Heaven above and the sea below,
And a little white whale on the go.
You're just a little white whale on the go.

June Note from Dulce

I can’t believe the school year is coming to an end. The children are going to graduate from Nursery school and goon to a new stage in their lives. I am going to miss them very much! Our theme this month is “Sea” you later.

Petit poisson (nage, nage, nage)
Petit poisson, petit poisson,
Nage, nage, nage,
Petit poisson, petit poisson,

“BURP” Excuse-moi …

A Few Words from Tina

May has been delightful! The weather has cooperated and we spent many days doing ourprogramming outside. Our plan is to continue this in June as well.

We will be busy preparing for Father’s day, Aloha Days and our Graduation Ceremonies. Before you know it, school will be over.

Please let me take this opportunity to thank you all for allowing me to be a part of your children’s lives. I have enjoyed myself tremendously! To those families leaving us for Kindergarten; we will miss you, but we know your children are ready for a new and exciting challenge. Please visit us and show us how much you have grown! Thank you parents for your support and enthusiasm; as you know, we couldn’t have done it without you!I leave you with one of our favourite circle singing games.

Have a great summer!

I have a little Pony.(Make a circle holding hands around the “pony”) Swing hands back and forth and sing…….

“I have a little Pony I feed him oats and hay,”

“I open up the stable doors and let him out to play” (everyone raise their hands, letting go and the Pony gallops out of the circle and around the room)

(Clapping) “He gallops here, he gallops there, galloping, galloping everywhere. He never stops until I say “Whoa Pony! My Pony whoa!!” (Pull back on your imaginary reins) and then call “Come back Pony!” and the child returns to the circle.

Repeat with the next child.

June Newsletter from Pui Wah

Hello everyone. The year end is fast approaching. Graduation plans are underway and as we watched the caterpillars become butterflies and fly away, I am reminded of the changes in the children in terms of growth and development and how personalities have emerged. The theme for June is Oceans/Sea you later. More warm weather days means more outdoor programming. Most learning through circle with be adapted into activities, books and songs for outdoors. Oceans and Sea animals will be explored through sensory activities. During play, differences between land and sea creatures will be discussed as well as types and sizes of sea creatures and varieties of fish. The properties of water will be explored through a series of science experiments. There are as follows. Which objects will float or sink; freezing water to make ice, melting ice to make water, watching water evaporate and also water temperature. We will also be tasting the difference between water and salt water to determine which bodies of water are safe to drink (sea water vs. water from lakes and rivers) Group and instructional games will be played as children who are graduating will be attending kindergarten in the fall. Some examples are Follow the Leader, Red Rover, Musical chairs, Freeze Tag and parachute games. The rootskill 4.11 (Seriating) 4.19 (Measuring Length, Weight) and 4.21 (Using Number Symbols and Operations) from ELECT is used.

5 Little Fishy in the Sea

5 little fishes swimming in the sea, teasing Mr. Sharkey, you can’t catch me, you can’t catch me.
Well along he came as quiet as can be and he snapped a fish right out of the sea.
(Continue with 4,3,2,1 fish until the final verse)
Now Mr. Sharkey is as lonely as can be.

Nemo Song (tune of BINGO)

In the ocean lived a fish and his name was Nemo.
N E M O, N E M O, N E M O and his name was Nemo.
(Continue by substituting a clap for each letter)
