Coming up this SPRING at RPNS!
Hello everyone! Spring is supposedly here…we saw crocuses in our play yard on March 24 peeking out from the snow! Let’s hope all the snow melts quickly.
Eggs to Chicks Science Experiment Eggs and an incubator will be arriving at the nursery school at the end of April with thanks to Bojana Djordejevic (Benjamin’s mommy). The children will learn how to take care of the eggs and see them hatch after 21 days! Very “egg-citing”!!
Mini Spartans Race Week at RPNS!
To promote healthy active living for the children, we will be holding a training week here at the nursery school from May 11 to 15 with daily obstacle courses (indoor and outdoor!). Our ‘Mini Spartans’ will be running, jumping, hopping , balancing and crawling around fun obstacles both indoors and outdoors! Each child will have a pledge form and we ask that you get family, friends, neighbours and co-workers to sponsor your child as ‘Mini Spartan’ Ambassadors for Healthy Active Living.(all proceeds to the RPNS Building Fund)
Please check your child’s file for pledge forms.
Back packs should be at school every day and should contain the following items:
Show and Share is on April 9th and 10th for all the groups. Please provide an item that is labelled with your child’s name. Make it something that your child can tell us a little about. Just a few words is all it takes to provide your child with enough confidence to speak in front of a group!
2015-2016 School Year Registration:
Many thanks to our currently enrolled families for promptly returning registration packages! Visitors during our Open House Week of March 2-6 said that they heard about RPNS through our families….so thank you for spreading the word! There are some of spaces available for September 2015.
As a cooperative nursery school, all parents are required to volunteer their time for special events and housekeeping duties (on top of scheduled duty days). Many thanks to the dedicated families that have helped out in various ways so far this year. For those of you who have not had any opportunity to contribute thus far, we have three major events coming up that require many volunteers:
Donations of small toys and prizes: we will need lots of small toys (new or gently used) for prizes on Family Fun Day. Drop them off in the labelled box by the Communication Table.
PARENT ~ TEACHER INTERVIEWS
Parents that are interested in discussing their child’s progress and development may do so beginning April 26 and ending May 15. A sign-up sheet will be posted in the hallway.
You certainly don’t want to miss your child’s graduation, so here are the dates to put on your calendars and in your Blackberries:
~ Toddler and 2Day Preschool Classes will graduate on Thursday, June 18
~ Junior and Senior Preschool Classes will graduate on Friday, June 19
Nursery School Closure
Typically, the teachers of RPNS return the week after graduation ceremonies to clean up, take inventory and put away all our equipment for the summer. This June, the Riverside Churches of Ottawa are expanding and renovating the washrooms (yeah….more toilets!). This will be a big job and to ensure that the task can commence asap, the nursery school will be closed by the afternoon of June 19. Paulette will be checking the nursery school email throughout the summer.
Lost & Found
We seem to have collected an assortment of hats, mittens, dishware (from our Christmas Concerts?) and other treasures. Please check the “Lost & Found” shelf above the French Intro class cubby area in the hallway and bring your treasures home. J

Outdoor play is important for us all. Our challenging weather has kept us in, for most of the winter, but hopefully, in April, we will be able to play outside on most days. Richard Louv,( Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder) expresses outdoor play this way;
"The physical exercise and emotional stretching that children enjoy in unorganized play is more varied and less time-bound than is found in organized sports. Playtime—especially unstructured, imaginative, exploratory play—is increasingly recognized as an essential component of wholesome child development.”
Please continue to dress your children in weather appropriate clothing. We will always be prepared to go outside if it is above -20 degrees centigrade and not pouring with rain!
In keeping with the "spring" theme we are celebrating "babies", this month. We will be discovering bird's nests and "Pysanka" or Ukrainian eggs, (the word pysanka comes from the verb pysaty, "to write", as the designs are not painted on, but written with beeswax), at the science table. Babies on the farm will be represented by the farm with animals located in the block and floor toy area.
A favourite "spring" song is Japanese in origin. It is as follows, and uses actions to help sing the song.
Springtime is Coming
Springtime is coming , springtime is coming,
Where does springtime come?
Up on the mountains, down in the valleys,( make a mountain with your hands, then a valley)
And right here at home! (hug yourself)

I believe spring is trying to show itself…..please hurry!
To help usher in the warm weather, we will be singing:
It is Spring time (sung to London bridges)
Leaves are growing (on the trees x3)
Leaves are growing on the trees,
It is springtime.
All the grass is turning green……
See the birdie build their nests…….
Watch the flowers start to grow…….
We will also be playing two new games!
Birdie where is your nest? and the Farmer in the Dell.
We will also be looking at different concepts: small, medium, large, Tall vs. short, Wide vs. narrow, on top vs. under. Adding descriptive elements helps to enrich language and helps us be better understood by everyone!
Bonjour. It seems that spring is finally coming. Our themes this month are All babies and Easter. Here are some of the songs and words that we will be practicing.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a happy holiday weekend!
