Winter Outdoor Play
Outdoor play with plenty of fresh air keeps children healthy and active! We still play outside in winter; enjoying sledding, shovelling, making snow angels and snowmen. When the temperature dips below -25*C and it is very windy, we will stay indoors. Paulette checks the temperature at the Environment Canada Weather Line 613-998-3439. Kindly ensure that your children are dressed appropriately for the weather.
GO Funding from the province received in 2018 has given up the opportunity to create 5 new Junior Preschool spaces and up to 8 new 2Day Senior Preschool spaces. More children means the need for more staff, so we welcome Rena Kaplansky to the teaching team here at RPNS! As always, RPNS can boast that the staff here are experienced and dedicated to ensuring quality programs.
Increasing the hours of our core day is another way to create more access to our quality program for our families! So the GO Funding will be used to extend our core day by another half hour starting February 2019. The new core hours will be 8:30 am to 12:00 noon.
Reminder of change to Tuition Fee Payments
The GO Funding as also allowed us to make child care for affordable and thus the reduction to your monthly tuition fees effective January 2019. It will be $60 for 5Day attenders.

Nursery School tuition receipts can be used for income tax purposes under Child Care. Keep your receipts as there is a $15 administration fee for additional receipt requests.
Thank you for your kind donations of toiletries, socks, underwear and books for the children of Annavale Headstart Nursery School.
Everyone had lots of fun decorating the gingerbread houses on Dec. 18 and 19 with help from some volunteer parents (thank you!). Thorncliffe Place Retirement Home warmly welcomed the little houses and they brought plenty of cheer for the seniors.
Our Christmas Concerts and Parties were successfully fun due to the efforts and talents of the children, teachers and parents who provided food and applause! A big “Thank You!” to Santa who took the time out of his busy schedule to visit us.
A big thank you to Bob Plourde who donated all the little wooden vehicles that we distributed by Santa at our parties. Bob had decided to close up his wood work shop last summer and wanted to find good homes for his handiworks.
Would you like to help out in your child’s classroom? We could certainly use an extra set of hands on special activity days. See the Classroom Buddy Sign-Up Calendar in the hall or send us an email. Note that parent volunteers need a Criminal Reference Check on file at RPNS.
Need some alone time with your partner after the busy holiday season or a Valentine dinner? Reserve you space for our next date night on Friday, Feb. 15 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. Parents must register their children and pre pay by Feb. 12 (your space will only be guaranteed with your pre- payment!).
New Building Project
We are very, very excited to announce that the city of Ottawa and the province of Ontario approved our Capital Funding Application! This means that we will receive funding for our new building project with an anticipated doors open date of December 2020.
RPNS has been working at relocating to a new building since I started working here in 2006. Ten years ago, the then board of directors mandated that this project be part of the vision for RPNS and the River Ward community. A “New Building Sub-Committee” was established 2 years ago and worked diligently towards this goal. I cannot thank enough the following committee members who spent countless volunteer hours working on obtaining funding for this project: Donyah Farhat, Crystal McConkey, Donna Bueckert, Melinda Assaf and Kate Cathrae. Many thanks as well to the current RPNS Board of Directors and past ones that supported this initiative.
We look forward to working with Canoe Bay Development, Andrew Fleck Children’s Services and Gowling WLG law firm during the next 2 years to complete this project. Now let’s roll up our sleeves and get to work!

CHRISTMAS CONCERTS AND PARTIES
It has been the tradition here at RPNS for the children to sing some holiday songs for their families. The concerts this year will be held on Tuesday, Dec.18and Wednesday, Dec. 19. All family members are welcome to share in the festivities. Should you be bringing along a child not currently registered at RPNS, kindly let the Director, Paulette, know so she can help Santa’s elves with their lists. All this singing will make us hungry so please sign up on the FOOD LISTposted in the hall and bring in some goodies! NOTE: Before Care will not be available on Dec. 18 & 19 and we will not be playing outdoors those days.
We are expanding our Junior Preschool Programs this January!
RPNS recently received funding to increase spaces and thus allow more access to early learning programs for Ottawa families!
Our RPNS Board of Directors decided to increase the spaces in our 2Day and 3DayJunior Preschool classes as that is currently where the demand is. So, starting this January 2019, these two classes will increase by 5 spaces (from 10 spaces to 15). The 5 new spaces in the 3Day Junior Preschool class have already been filled by families on our waitlist. We currently have 4 spaces available in our 2Day Junior Preschool class. Kindly contact Paulette should you (or someone you know) be interested in a space.
We will be hiring an RECE to join Janet & Lisa’s teaching team for January. RPNS certainly is growing!

What’s new for October:
Our Board of Directors have had a busy month orientating themselves to the ins & outs of our nursery school program. I wish to thank them for attending multiple meetings in September! At the first board meeting, it was identified that the educators could use support with toileting/diapering the children as many of the children are not yet ‘toilet learned’. With our washrooms being located down the hall to the classrooms, it means that educators and groups of children are spending lots of time in the washroom. Upon review of the RPNS fiscal budget, the board decided to create a “Program Assistant” position to help the educators. We are pleased to have Lyn Bussey as our newest staff member!
Just a few friendly reminders from the Director:
Fall Clean Up takes place on Saturday, October 20 starting at 9:00 am. Bring your rakes! Many thanks to Geoff for mowing the grass throughout the summer and September; to Caren for cutting back vines; and to Dennis for cutting back the brushes!
Community Fall Festival at the Hunt Club Riverside Community Centre on Saturday, Sept. 8 was terrific fun! Staff and volunteers were there face painting children of all ages! It was so nice to see some of our current families and alumni families enjoying the event. Many thanks to Chelsea, Denise, Bailey and Trang for doing the face painting.
Givng Thanks: Ottawa Food Bank Fall Food Drive
Kindly bring in non-perishable food items to the nursery school before October 5. Boxes will be in the hallway for your generous donations.
A reminder that the nursery school will be closed on Monday, October 8 for Thanksgiving Day.
Pumpkin Carving The children will get their hands gooey by scooping out the seeds from pumpkins on Oct. 29. Thanks in advance to the parents volunteering on these days and pumpkin donations are welcome!
Pumpkin Parties We will be celebrating this fun time of year with parties on Tuesday, Oct.30 and Wednesday, Oct.31. Family members are welcome to attend a morning of games, fun sensory activities and yummy snacks (See the food sign up poster in the hallway)!
We will be starting the festivities with a Fall Forest Story Walk so please ensure that children and family members are dressed for the weather. After the Story Walk, we will go inside for indoor fun, a Group Circle Sing-a-long and snack time. Costumes are optional….children may prefer just to wear orange & black.

RPNS Forest School for October!
All children attending RPNS participate in the Forest School pedagogy at some point during the nursery school year!
Dulce and her 2Day French Introduction class along with Paulette and Sarah (parent volunteer) are exploring the woods of Otterson Park on Thursdays for 4 week session blocks starting on Oct.4. The Forest and Nature School (FNS) pedagogy focuses on children learning through play in a natural, outdoor setting. Parents of children in this class will receive a Forest School Parent Handbook via email.
Forest School ties in perfectly with Ontario’s pedagogy “How Does Learning Happen?” and its four foundations:
Dulce’s Kindermusik program starts Oct. 9 and it takes place here at the nursery school right at 11:30 am for two groups (Tuesdays or Wednesdays). Check with Dulce to see if there are any spaces left.
